On Saturday, November 25, 2023 members of the SVMS Class of 2013, along with family and friends, came together to dedicate a bench in honor of their beloved classmate, Brendan. This gathering, held at St. Vincent Martyr School, served as a touching tribute to Brendan’s memory, bringing those who loved him together in reflection and remembrance. Amidst the backdrop of fond memories and shared experience, attendees convened to unveil the newly dedicated “Buddy Bench” which now stands as a lasting tribute to Brendan. Adorned with a plaque bearing Brendan’s name, this bench is a symbol of the enduring friendship of these SVMS alumni and the impact Brendan had on the SVMS community.
St. Vincent Martyr School Principal Sr. Noreen Holly, opened the dedication by pointing out the banner of Saint Brendan the Navigator, displayed by the bench. In Sr. Noreen’s home county of Kerry, Ireland, St. Brendan is known for urging us to do something every day to bring us closer to heaven. Sr. Noreen challenged us all to live this message of St. Brendan.
Rev. Msgr George Hundt, former Pastor of St. Vincent led the crowd in prayer and blessed the bench that bears Brendan’s name.
Philip O’Reilly, Brendan’s father, shared his gratitude for SVMS, the class of 2013, and all those people who were part of the beautiful community that loved Brendan.
And Brendan’s classmates and friends Katie Bishop, Sam Fuchs, Anthony Guerriero, and Julia Plunkett recounted cherished memories of the infectious laughter, kindness, and positive energy that were hallmark to Brendan. And of course, with Phil’s permission, they took this opportunity to poke lovable fun at their dear friend.
Brendan’s Buddy Bench sits by the entrance of St. Vincent Martyr School, under the shade of a tree, and serves as a place of solace and reflection. Future generations can stop to remember Brendan, or to sit with a buddy in his honor.
